Life Hits Hards!

Image
If there's anything my father did best, it was making me feel important, relevant and secure. I believe all parents naturally behave a certain way which transpires feelings of importance to their infants, it is an important parental role which builds a child's esteem, confidence,  self-belief and personality. Growing up I was outspoken and outgoing, fearless as a lion the world would not stop me! I believed just by one phone call my Pops would destroy anyone who got in my way. My father lead a dramatic demonstration at the UK embassy, he gathered Africans with mutual problems & concerns in this regard and held a wide placard which I forgot the inscription but the protest was in line with the embassy refusing me Visa entry into the UK to unite with my family; Such behaviour would make even an elderly person feel important and relevant in this world. When my Pops discovered that I was being maltreated at a relative's home, with immediate effect he plucked me out and I...

Running Costs

Image
People often get dizzy when we start talking numbers, my self included haha. Accounts are boring, they're mathematically taxing to the brain yet very important for scaling and record keeping. Without numbers you can't see your growth and progress, you can't see your stagnancy either. There have been many instances where my bananas failed me and I'm lying here realizing the lessons I've been passively learning that business is trial and error, and takes time. I have borrowed money from a few friends and had to pay it back in due time only to remain broke still, I understood why but I couldn't quite put a finger on it until now that I've started playing with numbers. You see there's no business which produces 100% profits after running costs, you'll be lying! Profits range between 25% & 37%. A crate of bananas is $7,50c and produces a profit of $1,80c before running costs. What could possibly be a running cost on a crate of bananas? A $...

My 25th year Epistle

I turn twenty five today! It's quite astounding what structure one's life can fashion into. I see kids get dropped off at these private creches by their parents during my morning rides and think to myself they are going to be so smart and amazing, they are going to excel. Then I remember I went to  a private creche in Randburg, Gauteng, South Africa and today I chase garbage trucks on a courier bike to dump a client's delayed garbage take-out for $0,25c as a courier service, I sell bananas and haybales off a scorch cart. What has become of that kid? What happened to all the bright dreams, outspokenness and liveliness? None all of this, life's current state, was planned, none! Ideally I am supposed to be pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering somewhere in Wales, living with family as well. That was the plan, where did that life's structure filter to? I wonder! I am in Zimbabwe today doing things I've never witnessed any of my parents do, and time and again...

A Vendor's Dating Life

A friend asked me about my love life last night, being articulate and making no bones about it I sent her an eight minute voice note. It's not an easy thing to be transparent about relations with the opposite gender as a lot of people are as insecure about that business as about their weight, finances, academics and the like. But for me I made peace with my relationship life's standing, I am not fazed by jeer "uyis'gwadi mampara" because I know if I put myself back in the game these okes will have nothing on me. One of my biggest fears before selling bananas in early 2019 was losing my stance in the game. I have been on this block since I was 10 years old with my childhood sweetheart, so I have my way with girls and having come up in the suburbs I've always gravitated to and landed a certain calibre of girls. So when I started selling I knew my graph would decline and that the hustle would take a huge toll on my dating life, and I did fear losing chances with ...

Learning Responsibility, for personal growth.

Image
I often ride 100 km on R2 and observe young boys herding cattle in Ntabazinduna & Mbembesi, some loading logs/firewood onto a donkey drawn scorch cart. By young I mean 10 years old. Then when I ride on A7 I see women and young girls tilling the land, this always strikes my conscience and really sits at the back of my mind as I'm stepping on the pedals chasing wind and watching all scenery whiz by. Rural children learn great responsibility at such a young age; Chopping wood and controlling a donkey back home is the indigenous equivalent of contemporary truck loading and driving to the delivery bay, it's a great responsibility, herding cattle too and tilling the land. I didn't grow up doing such things, many urban kids don't even know how to start a fire or make a garden bed. But in the country side, straight after school, they are walking a distance to go and fetch water, they are trodding into the fields to herd cattle back home, they are feeding fowl, t...

A Vendor Whose Visa was Declined

Image
I was denied a visa to the United Kingdom and turned around at the embassy up the Sandton Mall with a sore heart that I would never ever settle with my family, that has been the constant reality to this day. So on watching a video of Jeffery Mayi seeing his mom for the first time in 10 years I understood the overwhelming emotions that caught him absolutely off guard because it was so contagious. He cried like a baby regardless of his adult stature. Many people, especially African children who've reached fair adulthood today, were denied visa's to America, Australia, England, Germany, Canada etc and God knows the realities they've endured throughout the course of their lives from henceforth living without their families. Growing up we always lived with the idea that we'd soon join our families abroad. Our distant parents made sacrifices to get us enrolled at private schools so we could learn with Western speaking folk to polish up our English French or German...

The first class student who became a vendor.

Image
I was in the first class back in High-School, it wasn't by mistake, favouritism or abuse of some power. There were nine classes in one stream, being in the last class would have been the most inappropriate placement of a student such as myself. However, I didn't perform to par in the first class and it wasn't because I was stupid or dum, I just had susceptable irregular issues that interfered with my academic performance which also got in the way of my being a prefect, in fact we extended Prep time to 10PM and woke up at 4AM to read at that boarding school, I wasn't the one to snooze or doss on my books. I often meet my classmates in the city and have a rap; some are in college, some are comedians, some musicians, some miners, some in ministry and it always amuses me just how things don't really always turnout how society conventionalizes them to. Who'd have thought a first class student would be a vendor and a last class student would be a renow...
